Advent, Day 15: Where joy begins

Today’s reading: Isaiah 61:1-4

[The Lord] has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners…  (v. 1b)

What is good news to the wealthy, the powerful, the comfortable? The status quo: that all the conditions that got us here remain the same, so we will continue to enjoy luxury, to wield control, to be safe.

But what is God’s Good News to the poor, to the broken, to the entrapped? A complete overhaul: that all the conditions that got us here will be turned upside-down, so we can instead have plenty, be restored, be freed.

This is where joy begins: not in more of the same (policies, attitudes, “conveniences,” concepts) but in God’s exuberant plan to make all things new!

May we be willing to be changed.
May we be willing to see our world changed.
And may we speak out boldly,
proclaiming the joy of
God’s life-changing Good News!
